Soneium Supports ERC-8432: IP Licensing that People and AI Agents can Both Read.

Soneium is committed to advancing IP standardization, and intends to support the Onchain IP Asset and License Registry (ERC-8432) as one of the open standards in this area. AI agents can find a song, clip, or illustration and reuse it in seconds. Working out what they're allowed to do with it is harder: that information lives in contracts and platform databases, not in anything an agent can query.

ERC-8432, an open standard posted to Ethereum Magicians on September 28th, proposes a common interface for this. Registries identify IP assets, publish machine-readable license terms, and record license agreements onchain. Soneium plans to support it, and we'd like builders to review the draft and help shape it. Standardizing Tokenized IP infrastructure is how we fix that for everyone using ERC-8432.

What ERC-8432 does

ERC-8432 gives independent registries one common interface to identify Tokenized IP assets, publish machine-readable license terms, and record and check license agreements onchain. It standardizes the mechanism, not legal rights or policy.

  • Independent registries and flexible records. Anyone can run a registry, and registries work alongside each other without a central authority. Every record is addressed by (chainId, registry, id), meaning the chain it lives on, the registry that holds it, and its ID within that registry, so any app or AI agent can locate it unambiguously across registries and chains. Assets and agreements don't have to be IP tokens, though binding to standard ERC-721 IP tokens is fully supported.

  • Terms AI agents can read. Licensors publish reusable license terms alongside rights summaries that integrators and AI agents can parse efficiently.

  • Programmatic agreements and verification. Applications check agreement status directly onchain, and built-in validation hooks enable dynamic permission checks.

  • Modular composition. ERC-8432 interfaces cleanly with emerging primitives, such as ERC-8004 for agent identity and payment rails like x402, without imposing hard dependencies.

Why this matters: IP rights don't travel with the work

Who owns a song, what a remix may do with it, and what a licensee has already agreed to still live in contracts and platform databases. Every new use means finding a document and asking for permission. An AI agent cannot do that, it either finds digital rights or it moves on, and the creator gets nothing.

The onchain entertainment economy needs rights that everyone can read, check, and settle. That is the gap ERC-8432 is designed to address.

From ownership to permission

Holding an IP token proves who owns it. It does not tell an AI agent, a game, or a remix app what it is allowed to do. Ownership lives onchain, permission still lives offchain. Tokenized IP only becomes a building block when its licensing rules are as queryable as the IP token, and that is what a shared licensing standard provides.

Designed for real-world IP workflows

Creative ecosystems involve multiple stakeholders, and ERC-8432 reflects that multi-party reality:

  • The Creators and IP rights holders registers IP, attaches reusable license terms, and provides verifiable evidence or claims, without being locked into any single platform.

  • The application or platform evaluates terms, confirms agreement status onchain, and references records across registries and chains.

  • The AI agent discovers works, inspects terms, runs programmatic validation checks, and acquires agreements onchain without manual intervention.

A rights holder registers a recording and attaches license terms. An AI agent making a video finds it, verifies it can use the recording via* canLicense*, and acquires an agreement in one transaction. The video app confirms the agreement onchain before using the track.

Register once, license everywhere on Soneium

A rights holder who registers Tokenized IP under a standard interface is discoverable by every catalog, marketplace, and AI agent that speaks it. A developer building on Soneium integrates once and works with every compliant registry. An agent needs no bespoke integration per platform.

Every new registry, app, or agent makes the others more valuable, and nobody is locked in. That is the flywheel: more Tokenized IP, more builders on neutral primitives, more AI agents transacting, and more value flowing back to creators. Supporting ERC-8432 is one step in that direction; extensions for payments and royalty distribution are where the ecosystem grows next.

As we bring IP onchain, we are also supporting open standards like ERC-8432. This keeps Tokenized IP infrastructure transparent, composable, and open to everyone.
